Of the People, By the People, For the People - Vote YES on Prop 1

This blog is formed to educate people about the upcoming ballot initiative for a Michigan Constitutional Convention. The creators of this blog come from a wide variety of political opinions and have no political funding nor financial gain from our positions.

What we share in common is a belief that 2010 is the right time to review the Michigan Constitution and fix what is broken. Our Michigan Consitution requires that the voters decide every 16 years whether to hold such a Convention (called a 'con con') to make amendments to the Constitution. The last con con was created in 1961 and resulted in our 1963 Constitution.

The question at hand is whether the Michigan Constitution requires serious reform to address the problems of the legislative framework. A con con is not the vehicle to replace the legislative function of drafting or repealing laws (such as tax rates, public policies and program funding). This blog is not intended to endorse specific policies that would be the business of a con con, but welcomes examples of amendments that might be proposed.

Currently opposition to the 2010 is comprised of special interested that prefer the status quo. Groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and the largest Michigan union (MEA) are funding campaigns to oppose the con con as a means to prevent their interests from facing an uncertain future even if this means a stronger and healthier state.

This site will provide information and references to other con con sites. The first step in deciding whether to support a con con at this time is understanding what a con con can do and whether our current legislative conditions require it. Once it is obvious that a con con is a needed then an understanding of how a con con works is helpful. We welcome constructive participation.

Since this is an effort by people from a wide variety of political positions, we strive to focus on the core issue that we agree on: More Jobs, more state Revenue and less Taxes.
